SOLARIS plans new beamlines with promising applications for heritage research

How often do you have the chance to see the innerworkings of a synchrotron?

Thanks to Prof. Dr. Paweł Korecki and Dr. Tomasz Kołodziej we took advantage of a unique opportunity to visit the SOLARIS National Synchrotron Radiation Center in Krakow. Due to ongoing maintenance work, we were able to step inside and see parts of the apparatus that are usually shielded from visitors and scientists by thick concrete walls.

The SOLARIS synchrotron is a powerful tool for scientists who can already access two research lines: PEEM / XAS which is dedicated to microscopic and spectroscopic measurements using soft X-rays and UARPES which can be used to study the electronic structure of matter. In the future, several more research lines will be built  and these development plans are impressive!

We were particularly interested in learning more about the planned capabilities of the POLYX line. This line will enable spatial mapping of elements, chemical compounds and crystalline phases of samples. Such information about the chemical structure of paint layers and 3D tomograms which we can use to assess the state of mechanical damage will open exciting research avenues for us and strengthen outcomes for the CRAQUELURE project funded by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange. We cannot wait!
