Jerzy Haber Institute gets invitation to join CollectionCare project

Our group’s parent organization, Jerzy Haber Institute, got invitation to join international consortium of research institutions, museums and professionals working on preventive conservation.

CollectionCare is a project aimed to deliver innovative and affordable service for the preventive conservation monitoring, which so far is a complex and expensive problem due to the vast heterogeneity of artefacts’ materials and their physical properties.

CollectionCare system will be based on monitoring environmental conditions during exhibition, handling and transport of the cultural artefact with a low-cost wireless sensor. In the cloud, collected data will be crossed with developed multi-material degradation models, which will provide response to the user in terms of predicted degradation.

The finite element method allows the visualization of stresses arising in the painting on canvas using a model.

Our main task in the project will be to participate in developing an optimal finite element model (FEM) of moisture transport and dynamic stress and strain fields in canvas paintings. In order to obtain necessary database for model we will also perform laboratory measurements of mechanical and moisture-related parameters of canvases sized with glue, which is the layer primarily accounting for the stress development in the paintings.

Jerzy Haber Institute has a considerable experience of international standardization for conservation of cultural heritage, therefore our role in the project will be also:

  • identifying regulations and standards that are currently used and relating them to the degradation models that will be implemented in the project,

  • providing knowledge regarding risk assessment and development of preservation strategies for heritage institutions to the other partners in the project,
  • extending and updating our decision-supporting tool HERIe with an assessment of risk induced to canvas painting.

We are pleased to be a partner in such an initiative!
