Research tasks

1. Developing database of material properties for lime wood including fracture toughness – key properties to asses risk of object cracking – as well as Young modulus, Poisson ratio at wide range of moisture contents.

2. Adopting computer model to simulate crack propagation in lime wood sculptures.

3. Analysing impact of dynamic variations in relative humidity associated with operation of intermittent hearing system during religious services and commercial or cultural events in unheated historic buildings, on risk of mechanical damage.

4. Validating computational 2D structural model of wooden sculpture with the acoustic emission technique.

5. Developing climate control guidelines for historic houses and churches in Central Europe containing wood carvings, in particular informing preventive conservation strategy of St. Mary’s Basilica in Krakow housing the Veit Stoss Altarpiece.

6. Disseminating project outcomes to the academic community and practitioners at the both national and international level.
