Recently, through an interactive scan available on every electronic device, we gave the opportunity to deeply study with us the craquelure in the painting of Virgin and Child by an unknown author (XVth century) from the collection of St. Mary’s Basilica.
Our goal is to create a library of distinctive crack patterns and perhaps link them to individual national painting schools. That is why we are continuing the process of scanning valuable and recognizable works of art.
Another painting we scanned is Madonna under the Fir Tree by Lucas Cranach the Elder from the Museum of the Archdiocese in Wrocław, Poland. You can check the results at the same address where the first scan of the craquelure appeared:
The image is interactive – play with it. A full gallery of scans is available by clicking here.

The research was performed within CRAQELURE project funded by Norway Grants 2014-2021, project number 2019/34/H/HS2/00581.
